The Fundraiser Marks CLYLP’s Legacy of Academic and Professional Advancement for Latino Youth Across California

SACRAMENTO, CA – (March 19, 2024) The Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project Inc., (CLYLP) — a nonprofit that builds the leadership capacity of California’s youth—celebrated its 42nd anniversary with a reception in the state’s capital with the theme “Rooted in Our History, Growing in Our Impact”.  The event honored the contributions of alums, volunteers, students, Latino community advocates, and elected Latino officials.

Marking its continued growth, the annual event also provided an opportunity to meet CLYLP’s first Executive Director, Dr. Luisa Ortega, who was appointed last year. A former CLYLP alumna, Dr. Ortega brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization, further strengthening its mission to empower young leaders.

“For more than four decades, hundreds of committed volunteers have played a role in CLYLP’s tremendous impact of preparing Chicano and Latino youth to lead. Many of the young people who have participated in CLYLP’s programs are now members of the California Legislative Caucus, a testament to the power of the organization’s legacy,” said Dr. Luisa Ortega, CLYLP’s Executive Director. “As a symbol of our continued growth, I am honored to serve as CLYLP’s Executive Director and to deepen our legacy in partnership with the leaders and donors that support our work.”

“As an alumni of CLYLP, I am inspired to follow in the footsteps of the thousands of CLYLP alumni who are now leaders in their respective fields,” said Sebastian, CLYLP Bay Area Ambassador. “I know that beyond CLYLP’s programs, I am part of an incredible network committed to CLYLP’s mission of creating opportunities for Chicano and Latino youth.”

Since 1982, thousands of high school students throughout the state have benefited from CLYLP programs that enhance leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, and cultural awareness, and provide an understanding of state and local government. CLYLP further supports alums of its high school programs through its legislative fellowship, scholarships, career development, and vast professional network.
