Will also receive special recognition from Los Angeles City Council on October 13 for Hispanic Heritage Month

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 5, 2023)— For the past 14 years Visión y Compromiso, the largest state-based nonprofit organization of promotoras, has dedicated the month of October to celebrate the contributions of promotoras and elevate their voices and impact in the community. In 2009, ACR 75 designated “California Promotores Month.” It was passed by all members of the California State Legislature to recognize promotoras’ positive influence for the health and well-being of the state’s residents.

“We’re grateful to hold this month-long celebration to recognize our efforts to advance education, leadership and resources for our promotoras who are at the frontlines of promoting health and well being for the Latino community,” said Maria Lemus, Executive Director of Visión y Compromiso. “California Promotores Month in October is dedicated to recognizing these achievements across our 5,000 strong promotora network, celebrating together and continuing the advocacy work.”

Additionally, on October 13, Visión y Compromiso will receive a recognition from Los Angeles City Councilmember Imelda Padilla honoring its achievements and work for the Latino community statewide. A resolution will be presented to the organization honoring Hispanic Heritage Month during the City Hall meeting.

A predominantly women-led workforce, promotoras are trusted messengers and leaders in their often-marginalized communities, providing information, resources, and guidance. They share similar characteristics as the residents they serve, reducing barriers to health education and services that are common for native-born and immigrant communities.
