In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to spotlight Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), a driving force in empowering Latinas to take on leadership roles in politics, business, and beyond. Founded in 1989 by a coalition of visionary leaders, HOPE was established to address the systemic underrepresentation of Latinas in decision-making positions.

Transforming Latina Leadership Through Education & Advocacy

HOPE has impacted more than 60,000 Latinas through transformative programs such as:

    • The HOPE Leadership Institute (HLI) – A premier leadership training program that equips Latinas with the skills and networks to lead in government, business, and the nonprofit sector.

    • The College Leadership Program – Designed to support Latina college students in developing leadership skills and professional connections.

    • The Youth Leadership Program – Empowering high school Latinas to engage in civic leadership and advocacy.

A Legacy of Breaking Barriers

The HOPE Leadership Institute (HLI) 2025 Cohort marks HOPE’s 27th class of Latina leaders driving change across California. From Jes Montesinos, Senior Director at the San Francisco Foundation, to Mitzi Salgado, Founder & CEO of The Cultura Media in San Diego, HLI continues to empower Latinas through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy.

Under the leadership of Helen Torres, HOPE has trained over 2,000 Latina leaders, with program graduates securing over 1,800 leadership positions across various industries. These programs are instrumental in closing gaps in political representation, economic opportunity, and social mobility for Latinas.

Reflecting on HOPE’s impact, Helen Torres states, “HOPE was founded by Latina leaders who knew Latinas deserved a seat at every decision-making table. My journey is deeply rooted in this mission—creating pathways for women like my immigrant mother, so they no longer have to fight for acceptance but instead lead with confidence, purpose, and impact. Together, we are shaping a future where Latina leadership is not the exception but the norm.”

In recognition of her leadership in advancing racial and gender equity, Helen Torres was honored with the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award in 2024 — a testament to the lasting impact of HOPE’s mission.

HOPE’s Influence: Latina History Day & Beyond

Every year, HOPE organizes impactful events such as Latina History Day, drawing over 1,000 community and business leaders to address pressing issues, including:

    • The Latina Pay Gap – Advocating for wage equality and economic empowerment.

    • Education Equity – Promoting equitable access to education opportunities for Latinas.

    • Civic Engagement – Encouraging Latinas to take active roles in shaping public policy and getting involved in their communities.

On March 7th, HOPE Hosted its 34th Annual Latina History Day with inspiring keynote speakers including Nathalie Rayes, United States Ambassador of Croatia,  Ret., Elsa Marie Collins, co-founder of Poderistas , Alejandra Santamaria, President and CEO of LAist, and MJ Acosta-Ruiz, ESPN SportsCenter anchor.
